Since Warhammer 40,000's 10th edition was released last year, each of the wargame's factions has been getting the traditional rules refresh in the form of a new Codex book. The latest deals with the Adeptus Custodes, genetically engineered bodyguards of the Emperor so gigantic they make space marines look weedy. (They also happen to beΒ Henry Cavill's army of choice). There are 10,000 of them and in the past they've only ever been depicted as men. In this latest iteration, shock horror, at least two of the Custodes are women.

Most players seem to have responded to this by shrugging and getting back to arguing about the new rules, but there's always a vocal minority who go on a tear. The Mail Online ran a typically subtle and understated headline that declared "It's Wokehammer!" and the meme community Grimdank has declaredΒ posts about "Femstodes" will only be allowed for one weekΒ before they join "Female Space Marine posts" as a banned topic. Games Workshop's official response is aΒ tweetΒ that says, "In regards to female Custodians, there have always been female Custodians, since the first of the Ten Thousand were created."

Is this a retcon? Yep, and it won't be the last. Warhammer 40,000 has had fluid "lore" right from the start. The original Custodian Guards were depicted as shirtless hunks who never leave Earth---a long way from the heavily armored galaxy-spanning golden gods they became---to say nothing of tweaks to the 40K canon like ditching half-eldar space marines and rewriting the Horus Heresy from a short story a handful of pages long into aΒ series of 60+ novels.

The Adeptus Custodes aren't 40K's only genetically engineered supersoldiers, of course. The setting's flagship faction are the space marines, who are created differently---where Custodes are enhanced via a unique process begun when they're infants, space marines begin being grafted with a "gene-seed" when they're on the verge of puberty. And while the explanation that space marine gene-seeds are "keyed to male hormones and tissue types" goesΒ back a way, it's not the real reason Games Workshop made a whole army of dudes who are men.

As GW's former head of IP Alan Merrett once explained onΒ Facebook, "The reason there aren't female Space Marines has nothing to do with lore, or background or character of Marines. It's to do with [the] simple logistics of making miniatures and selling miniatures." In the 1980s GW sold miniatures in sets called blister packs, and as Merrett explained "the intention was that upwards of 25% of all models would be female." That didn't last because "retailers kept complaining to us that customers weren't buying the female models and could we not include any in their restocks." By the time Warhammer 40,000 was designed, GW made sure its poster boys were, well, boys to ensure they'd sell. As Merrett put it, "All the background fluff about why there are only male Marines is there to justify a commercial logistics issue."

And the same was true of the Adeptus Custodes, until it wasn't. Though the customers at the average Warhammer shop are mostly men, these days there are usually one or two women as well. And the men are a lot less likely to throw a hissy-fit about having women in their armies than g*mers in the 1980s, despite what Reddit and Twitter might suggest. All of 40K's lore and storytelling exists to provide context for selling toy soldiers to people, and as the customer base changes so too will that lore.

:marseytrad: "Food banks are for the needy." :marseytunaktunak: "Saars they are giving free food away!!"

This jeet is advertising food banks as a means of "saving hundreds of dollars on groceries" to other international students. Indians have a gift for finding new ways of scamming in every facet of life.

Zero trust society man. Not only does he have no shame over stealing from the poor, he's broadcasting it so that other can steal from the needy as well. Horrible. :marseydisagree:

Mass deportation should commence immediately :marseyunpettable:

This is literally the top comment, holy shit. Literally every mainstream Canadian subreddit is keyed on the Jeet Question, that's how bad things have gotten.

This was posted a few days back on Instagram( you can check his account name on the video). Now he seems to have deleted the video and also his LinkedIn account because many people were spamming him and contacting his employer.

Edit: This video was also posted on the wlu sub a day ago which is probably the university where he studies.

:#marseyrofl: :#marseyemojirofl:

This guy probably ruined his life over this. I'd be interested in seeing if there are actually any consequences. It's unlikely, though. His employer is probably indian and sees nothing wrong with it, and all universities are run by Marxists.

Where's the deport button

As I've mentioned 100 times before, the powerusers of StackOverflow are completely detached from the core goals of the site and instead prefer to bicker amongst themselves in the Meta forum.

A poweruser named "M--" (profile: "Engineer by day, G*mer by night. Always in the process of learning something new.") says:

I raised an NAA [Not An Answer] flag on this answer Answer to: Blank space appearing at bottom of all webpages in Google Chrome on iOS [closed] which got declined.

Powerusers don't like having their flags declined because it goes on their permanent record, and god forbid one poweruser disagree with another.

The original question has now been blatted from existence, because just like /r/subredditdrama then whenever a post is linked into Meta then it's guaranteed to be brigaded into an unusable mess, even in cases like this where the question is perfectly valid and the complaint is about one single answer.

Now what is the answer that so annoyed this poweruser?:

THANK YOU! Disabling smooth scrolling took care of this problem on my iPhone 14 Pro on iOS 17.2.1.

Note that this answer includes the exact steps taken to solve the issue and the version on which it works. M-- just dislikes it because it starts with "THANK YOU!".

The rest of this Meta page totals over 5000 words of comments and arguments.

Some people just seem to love getting into involved debates of how should a particular turd be classified and how to correctly dispose of it, instead of, you know, just getting rid of it. Meanwhile dozens more are deposited around them... Someone spends ten seconds mashing the keyboard, and then bunch of other people take few man-hours figuring out what to do with it

comments one user with no self-awareness whatsoever.

Another user writes an essay explaining the workflow for handling answers and discussing the intricacies of:

You are the latest victim of a problem Stack Overflow has had for years; there are conflicting rules about how NAA and VLQ flags are supposed to work.

I'll let anyone else who wants to read through all of the answers and comments for pure :autism:

Just read most of Stephen King's Dr Sleep and it sucks :pepereeeeee:

The first 200 pages or so are interesting and seem like a plausible continuation of the story of Danny from The Shining. But then everything turns into cardboard cutout characters and cliffhanger curiosity-bait endings every couple of pages.

King has always been uneven, he wrote a few things that I think are really good, like the first Shining, The Stand, It, Pet Sematary, and some of his short stories. Even in some of his best stuff he would sometimes be plagued by overuse of repetitive inner monologues and cartoonish violence scenes to the point that both would lose their effect, but he also put in enough interesting and genuinely eerie things to make the books work, and he had a good touch for creating characters who seemed believably human and three-dimensional. I do not hold his unevenness much against him. Poe has like 10 or so great stories and 7 or so great poems, the rest bore me. Lovecraft has like 15 great stories and a few good poems but most of his stories and poems suck. I value these writers for their peak, not their average.

And same with King. But I write this not to darn King, but to try to describe the difference between good writing and bad. In King's less good work the mechanics become too obvious and repetitive. While reading, you become aware of just how and why the material is working on you, you see the slot machine nature of your interaction with the text. Like taking hits of a drug repeated once every minute or two as you read, every short section crafted to make you want to find out what happens next, with tiresome tropes including cliffhanger-ending sentences and cutting away from dialogue just before a character explains his plan to another character, just to set up King showing you what actually happens in the next scene.

All these tricks become tiresome, one feels like a junkie while reading, just wanting to get that next hit of finding out what happens with that curiosity-bait that King set up in the previous scene. A common and boring type of writing, though it can be effective if you grab the reader enough in the beginning to make them hooked on continuing to put more attention coins into the slot machine.

It will probably bring some laughter if I say that King had a real genius at one point, but he did. It was the genius of, first... bringing horror to modern American type things like the white picket fence childhood or the shopping mall or the airport; second... of writing a sort of romantic Bruce Springsteen style Americana about blue collar or struggling artist type hard-scrabble people from poor or average backgrounds; third... being willing to write about stuff that a lot of people felt but didn't want to openly talk about, like guilt about not having done enough for close ones in their lives, or anger at and desire to hurt those same close ones.

I've gotten so much enjoyment from King's work that I don't begrudge him having lost the gift, I can understand that. I rarely write anything good these days myself that doesn't use the suffixes -oid, -cel, or -chad.

But I felt compelled to post this screed and invite the longpostbot. Perhaps the failure of the modern Kingcel stuff can tell us more about why some of the original Kingchad stuff actually works.
